Where does Turkish stand as a world language?

Turkish is a Turkic language related to Azeri and Uzbek. It has experienced significant changes through its long history. For centuries it borrowed hundreds of words from Arabic and Persian. Since the creation of the Turkish Language Foundation (TDK) some 60 years ago it has changed drastically. Many of these borrowed words have been replaced by new (and old) Turkish vocabulary. It ranks today as the 22nd most widely spoken language in the world, close behind French and Italian. There are some 80 million Turkish speakers worldwide.

How can I possibly learn all those Turkish words?

Fortunately for English speakers Turkish uses a modified version of the Roman alphabet with 29 letters, comprising 8 vowels and 21 consonants. Previously it was based on Arabic script. This was outlawed in 1928 by the modernising Kemal Atatürk. As well as recognising the letters you should be able to master their sounds early on in your Turkish language training. Begin the easy way by learning the many Turkish words you already know. Fax, otel, kontrol, banka, kredi karti, turist, pardon, drugstore, tablet, bandaj are just a few.

Will it be hard for me to learn Turkish?

Turkish resembles Finnish and Hungarian in being an “agglutinative” language – one which adds syllables to make longer words with added meaning. It does have an abundance of suffixes or word endings. In fact Turkish looks more difficult than it really is. Although harder to learn than the main Western European languages the alphabet is mostly the same with corresponding sounds. Also it is simpler than the English spelling system and more regular.
