8 TOP TIPS on Cultural Understanding
An appreciation of other people’s cultures is vital for success in international trade. People from other cultures have different norms, practices and expectations, despite outward similarities. Doing business our way is not the only way!
Sharing words is not the same as sharing their meaning. Using a common language can sometimes cause cultural misunderstandings. When we assume wrongly “we’re speaking the same language” - that’s when the trouble starts!
Learn about the culture of the people that you are dealing with. Whether you are going to be living in their country or working with them in your own country as a business partner, get to know their protocols, manners and practices.
One of the most effective ways of gaining specific cultural awareness is a cultural briefing. Properly geared to your needs, it will give you a rapid insight into the social background and business practices in your host / partner country.
Make your arrangements for a cultural briefing well in advance. Cultural briefing is very specialised training and consultants get very busy. They need enough preparation time to make your briefing as relevant as possible for you.
Inform your provider thoroughly about what you want. Cultural consultants need to know everything they can about the reason for your briefing and your relationship with the target culture. Help them to do a really good job for you!
Make sure you ask plenty of questions in your briefing. A good cultural consultant does not want to lecture you. They want to interact with you as much as possible to make sure that they are giving you the knowledge you want.
Find a training provider who specialises in cultural briefings. Briefings are provided by training companies who specialise in this kind of work. There are only a handful of them in the UK. Get recommendations or client references.
