What is the advantage for me in Swedish language training?
If you are going to be living or working on a regular basis with Swedish speakers, then a Swedish language course could be very useful. Swedish is spoken predominantly in Sweden where it is the de facto standard language and in Finland where it is one of the two official languages. Here it is spoken as mother tongue by some 300,000 people, especially along parts of the Finnish coastline and on the Åland islands. Swedish is also one of the official languages of the European Union.
Where does Swedish stand amongst the world’s languages?
Swedish is closely related to two of the other Scandinavian languages, Danish and Norwegian, with which it is mutually intelligible. Indeed the mainland Scandinavian languages could very well be considered to be dialects of a common Scandinavian language. There are no official regulatory institutions for the Swedish language though the Swedish Language Council (Språkrådet) has semi-official status and government funding. In terms of its ranking amongst the most widely spoken languages Swedish appears in 89 th position with around 9.3 million native speakers in Sweden and Finland.
How will I be able to learn all that Swedish vocabulary?
Swedish, along with Danish, Norwegian, Faroese and Icelandic, is classified as a North Germanic language. This group of languages is often referred to as the Scandinavian or Nordic languages. Modern Swedish includes words from German and English and a significant scientific and religious vocabulary of Greek and Latin origin, often borrowed through French. Today English has high status in business and a lot of current terminology, borrowed from English, is used in preference to the Swedish alternative: agenda, boom, controller, cyberspace, design, headhunt, prospect, printer. That should help your learning process!
Will it be hard for me to get my tongue around Swedish?
Swedish uses the same Roman alphabet as English but with three additional characters: å, ä and ö. These are considered as distinct letters in Swedish and appear after z in the Swedish alphabet unlike the German umlauts in the German alphabet. Swedish is notable for having a large number of distinct vowels sounds and the lack of standardised pronunciation can be a problem for students of Swedish. However, pronunciation coaching, as part of your Swedish language training, will help you to get to grips with it.
