What benefit will I get from Spanish language training?

If your work involves regular contacts with Spanish speakers, then a Spanish language course would give you many advantages. Spanish is the official language in Spain, the UK’s 7th biggest trading partner, the Balearic Islands, the Canaries, Ceuta and Melilla. It is also the mother tongue for most of the population of Central and South America and an increasing minority in the US.

Is Spanish really such an important language?

Spanish is a Romance language closely related to Catalan, Galician and Portuguese. It evolved from Latin and the first examples of the written language appeared in Northern Spain in the 11th century. It is spoken today by more than 230 million native speakers on 4 continents. This makes it the 3rd most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin and English!

How can I learn so many Spanish words?

Many English and Spanish words are remarkably similar: solución (solution), familia (family), mucho (much), explicar (explain), objeto (object), memoria (memory), nacional (national). They have common roots via Norman French and Latin borrowings. Some words we know, such as admiral (almirante) and cotton (algodon), are of Arabic origin from Spain’s Moorish past.

Will it be hard for me to speak Spanish?

Spanish uses the Latin alphabet like English plus the acute accent to denote stressed syllables and the tilde in Ñ and ñ. Pronunciation is reckoned to be quite easy for English speakers.
