How will I benefit from Russian language training?
If your work involves regular contacts with Russian speakers, then a Russian language course could give you a commercial advantage. Russian is the most widely spoken language in Europe and the most widespread of the Slavic languages. It is an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Crimea and the United Nations. It is used as a second language in some 17 other countries.
Where does Russian stand as a world language?
Russian is an Indo-European language – like Sanskrit, Greek, Latin and the modern Germanic, Romance and Celtic languages. Written examples exist from the 10th century. Some of the greatest works of literature were penned in Russian by writers like Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Puskin and Chekhov. Its importance in the 20th century waned after the fall of the Soviet Union. It is still significant as a lingua franca in Eastern Europe and Asia. It ranks today in the top 8 world languages with over 140 million native speakers and 100 million more second language speakers.
How can I possibly learn all those Russian words?
Russian is linked historically to other European languages through
Greek and Latin. Thus it contains many words almost identical to the English:
school, student, atmosphere, fact. English in turn has borrowed words from
Russian: vodka, tsar, tundra, sputnik. More recently Russian has borrowed
key words from English about computing: chat, Internet, site, provider. So
it’s much more familiar than you realised!
Will it be hard for me to learn Russian?
Russian gives the impression of being difficult for English speakers. Certainly it is somewhat harder than the main Western European languages. Much of this is to do with the Cyrillic alphabet. Although it appears a lot different from our Roman alphabet, there are some similar letters with the same sounds. Also it is simpler than the English spelling system and more consistent. You should be able to grasp it during the first week of your Russian language training. The grammar uses a lot of suffixes and prefixes rather like Latin or German.
Will your method really enable me to learn Russian?
Our approach involves “learning by doing”. Many years’ experience of “communicative methodology” has enabled us to develop dynamic exercises which help you to use Russian practically - as you learn it - using relevant materials and situations. You could be one of the growing number of people mastering Russian.
