What is the advantage for me in Norwegian language training?
If you are going to be living or working on a regular basis with Norwegian speakers, then a Norwegian language course could be very useful. Norwegian is spoken predominantly in Norway, where it is the official language. Although t here is no official standard form of Norwegian, there is a de facto spoken standard known as Standard Østnorsk (Standard East Norwegian), spoken mainly by the urban upper and middle class in East Norway. This is the form generally taught to foreign students.
Where does Norwegian stand amongst the world’s languages?
Norwegian is closely related to two of the other Scandinavian languages, Danish and Swedish, with which it is generally mutually intelligible. Indeed the mainland Scandinavian languages could very well be considered to be dialects of a common Scandinavian language. The Spr åkrådet (Norwegian Language Council) is the official body which regulates Norwegian spelling, grammar and vocabulary. In its ranking by number of native speakers Norwegian appears in 107 th position with around 4.8 million native speakers.
How will I be able to learn all that Norwegian vocabulary?
Norwegian, along with Danish, Swedish, Faroese and Icelandic, is classified as a North Germanic language. This group of languages is often referred to as the Scandinavian or Nordic languages. Most Norwegian vocabulary comes from Old Norse although Middle Low German was also influential on both vocabulary and grammar. The main source of new load words today is English: rapper , e-mail, catering, juice, bag, catering, service are examples. Foreign words used to get “Norwegianised” spelling but today English words are fashionable in their original form. That is very helpful for English native speakers!
Will it be hard for me to get my tongue around Norwegian?
Norwegian uses the same Roman alphabet as English with three additional characters: æ, ø, å. The letters c , q, w, x and z are only used in foreign loanwords. Like Swedish, Norwegian is one of the very few tonal languages in Europe. It has two distinct pitch patterns which are used to differentiate two-syllable words with otherwise identical pronunciation. This can present problems for foreign learners. However, pronunciation coaching, as part of your Norwegian language training, will help you to get to grips with this.
