Latvian is the official state language of the Republic of Latvia. It is spoken by about 1.4 million native speakers in Latvia and some 150,000 in other countries. There are thought to be another 1-1.5 million speakers of Latvian as a second language. It is one of only two surviving Baltic languages, along with Lithuanian, though the two languages have widely different vocabularies and are not mutually intelligible. It is also an official language of the European Union. There are two official regulatory bodies concerned with the Latvian language: the Terminology Commission of the Academy of Science of Latvia and the Latvian Language Expert Commission of the State Language Centre.

Today the Latvian alphabet consists of 33 letters, with 9 vowels and 24 consonants, excluding the letters Q, W, Y and X. There is an almost perfect correspondence between Latvian spelling and pronunciation (what you read is what you hear!).
