Korean is the official language of both South and North Korea and one of the 2 official languages spoken in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of China. Many linguists classify it as an Altaic language whilst others believe that it is a language unrelated to any others. There are estimated to be about 80 million speakers throughout the world including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan, South Africa and the Philippines. In South Korea the language is regulated by the National Institute of Korean Language.

Important considerations for your English to Korean or Korean to English translation

The Korean writing system is known as Hangul. Unlike Chinese or Japanese Kanji characters, Hangul is not a logographic system (in which symbols directly represent ideas) but an alphabetical one which includes 14 consonants and 10 vowels. The Korean language was influenced by Chinese in the form of Sino-Korean words which account for about 60% of the vocabulary. Chinese Hanja characters are used in South Korea to write some of these words. Native Korean words make up about 35% of the Korean vocabulary, while the remaining 5% comes from loan words in other languages, the vast majority of which are English. We will be pleased to supply your Korean translations by e-mail, as hard copy, on disk, or by fax in the format of your choice.
