How can I possibly learn enough useful Japanese?

Japanese is closely linked to the ideas, traditions and customs of Japan. Perhaps most significant is the way its grammatical system is used to express politeness and formality. Understanding it can inspire your appreciation of Japanese culture. Moreover, the Japanese are always impressed when foreigners – however modestly – try to use their language. Above all it demonstrates your consideration and respect.

Will it be hard for me to learn Japanese?

Certainly the time and commitment involved in learning Japanese should not be underestimated. The sound system is fairly straightforward with “pure” vowel sounds similar to Spanish or Italian. Pronunciation coaching as part of your Japanese language training will show you how this works. However, the script or kanji characters, based on Chinese, is more challenging, especially for someone used to the Roman alphabet. Grammar also needs to be grasped along with an adequate knowledge of vocabulary.
