How does German rate on the world stage?

German is closely related to Dutch, English, Frisian and Yiddish. It is one of the 10 most widely spoken languages with over 140 million native speakers in more than 16 countries. German still plays an important role as an international language or lingua franca throughout Europe.

How will I be able to learn all that German vocabulary?

English and German are West Germanic languages. English was born out of the Anglo-Saxon domination of the British lsles after the Romans departed in 410 AD. The basic notions of everyday life were so engrained in English that we still use them today. These short “bread and butter” (Brot und Butter!) words: mother, father, brother, house, milk, water, wind are almost the same in modern German. That should give you a head start!

Will it be hard for me to get my tongue around German?

German uses the Latin alphabet like English but with some accents or diacritics as in ü,ä,ö. Pronunciation is relatively easy for English speakers with the added advantage that it corresponds directly to its spelling (what you see is what you say).
