What is the advantage for me in Dutch language training?
If you are going to be living or working on a regular basis with Dutch speakers, then a Dutch language course could be very useful. Dutch is one of the official languages of the European Union, the Netherlands, Belgium, Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles and Suriname. It is also spoken in small areas of northern France and western Germany, Indonesia and eastern Guyana. Its more distant relation, Afrikaans is spoken in South Africa.
Where does Dutch stand amongst the world’s languages?
Dutch is closely related to German, English, Frisian and Afrikaans, a 16th century offshoot of Dutch. As well as the standard language and dialect forms spoken in the Netherlands, the Belgian and northern French variant is known as Flemish. In terms of its world ranking amongst the most widely spoken languages it appears 41 st with around 22 million native speakers in more than 16 countries.
How will I be able to learn all that Dutch vocabulary?
Dutch, like English and German, is a West Germanic language. It is often referred to as a bridge between English and German. Like English it includes words of Greek, Latin and many more Romance-based words than German. There is also a steady growth in words borrowed from English, even if applied and pronounced in different ways. Because of the family relationship with English many everyday words: street, stone, friend, storm, house, fork, milk, water are almost the same in modern Dutch. That should help you!
Will it be hard for me to get my tongue around Dutch?
Dutch uses the Latin alphabet like English but with some accents such as the diaeresis, grave and acute accents. These can be used to denote stress which matters in Dutch and denotes differences in meaning. Pronunciation can be a challenge as many of the Dutch vowel sounds are difficult for non-native speakers. However, pronunciation coaching, as part of your Dutch language training, will help you to get to grips with it. Also Dutch has a word order very different from English and this can be a hurdle for Anglophones.
